Clinical Lab Design

Clinical Lab Design

Clinical laboratory design is a specialist area that depends on understanding a clinical lab throughout, from what it is, how it functions, and what researchers need from their workspace.

S+B has more than 50 years of experience in clinical lab design, transforming old and obsolete laboratories into contemporary, modern clinical research facilities with versatile service delivery, fume cupboards, and integrated safe storage.

To do this, we adhere to stringent clinical laboratory design guidelines, both our own in-house quality commitments and internationally recognised British Standards.

If your laboratory is subject to specifications (e.g., a higher Containment Level or Biosafety Level), we can design to meet those standards too.

What is a clinical lab?

The typical definition of a clinical laboratory is a facility where tests are carried out on samples/specimens, often to diagnose a patient's condition or to improve their treatment. But in truth, it's a much broader term than that, and no single lab design will always be optimal without making some adjustments.

Clinical lab design should always be based on an analysis of the kind of work to be carried out in the facility. It should also include versatility and agility in case those needs change in the future (and to maximise resale value, if desired).

When starting a new clinical laboratory design process, we will first verify the needed services (e.g., gas supply) and the materials that will be handled (e.g., hazardous chemicals and biological samples).

This helps us determine the type of clinical lab you will be operating so we can ensure our designs comply with all regulations and legal requirements for biosafety, safe handling of chemicals, and more.

Clinical Laboratory Design Guidelines

Clinical laboratory design guidelines are written with safety in mind and often include safe storage of samples, specimens and hazardous chemicals, as well as safe handling practices for all those substances.

Your clinical laboratory design layout can directly impact meeting these guidelines, not just in the construction of your facility but on a continuing basis.
For example, separate secure storage positioned directly below the workbench can mean hazardous materials do not need to be moved around as much or stored together when they should ideally be in a separate cupboard.

Easy overhead access to services like gas can remove trailing hoses' tangle and trip hazards. At the same time, integrated fume cupboards mean work can be carried out in a controlled and ventilated environment if there is any risk of a reaction or other gaseous emission.

How much does it cost to set up a clinical laboratory?

The total cost of bespoke clinical laboratory design depends on many variables, including the size of the facility, the materials used, and any custom manufacture of lab furniture

S+B’s clinical lab design is a good way to get the most out of the budget for your clinical lab fit-out or refit. That’s because we can provide an end-to-end service in a single contract, from consultancy to installation.

Not only does that mean you won’t need to find a contractor to fit your furniture once it’s designed and manufactured, but it also means that you’ll get it installed by the same people who created the design, so the whole process is faster, easier and error-free.
