SMRU Mahidol University Thailand – Research Labs

S+B UK, in partnership with Charleston Scientific, recently completed a project to design, manufacture and install custom-made furniture for the research labs at Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) in Mae Sot, Thailand.

The SMRU is an important field station of the Faculty of Tropical Medicine at Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. Supported by the Wellcome Trust (UK), SMRU aims to provide quality healthcare to marginalized populations living on both sides of the Thai-Myanmar border.

The recently remodelled laboratory facilities at SMRU include a malaria lab, haematology lab, insectary, microbiology lab and freezer room, which will be utilized to support the community engagement, maternal and child health, malaria elimination task force, and tuberculosis program to the over 130,000 Karen, Mon, Karenni ethnic minority groups living in a string of refugee camps along the Thai-Myanmar border.

The custom-made laboratory furniture supplied by S+B UK includes Pedestal lab benches with under-bench storage and shelving, water and electrical services, and bespoke tall storage solutions. The furniture is specifically designed to improve the research capabilities of SMRU while ensuring the safety and comfort of its staff.

This project marks a significant contribution to the development of high-quality research facilities in Thailand and represents the commitment of S+B UK and Charleston Scientific to drive progress and innovation in the region’s research landscape.
